2014 RC Laser Queensland Championships

Congratulations Nigel Price (1st), Peter Burford (2nd), Randy Atkinson (3rd) and all of the competitors who sailed at the 2014 RC Laser Queensland Championships on Sunday 1st June.

Another great event hosted at Lake Kawana by the Sunshine Coast Radio Yacht Club (SCRYC).

Racing started in a southwesterly breeze of about 5 knots. As the morning progressed the direction changed to east southeast about the same strength.

Peter Burford from the Paradise Radio Yacht Club on the Gold Coast put on a great performance in the morning with 4 wins from 6 races. At lunch Peter was holding a handy lead of seven points.

After everybody recharged their batteries and their bodies at lunch time, the racing continued with the breeze holding direction from the east southeast.

The overall skill level of the RC Laser fleet continues to improve with some very close racing and minimal contacts and rule violations.

Seven races were held after the lunch break in fading breeze, with some of the last races quite a test of concentration as glassy patches were starting to appear with good wind in between.

RC Laser Champion Finds the Breeze

Nigel Price somehow found the breeze and managed four firsts in the afternoon to take 1st position at the end of the day.
Peter Burford sailed easily into 2nd place with Randy Atkinson coming in 3rd.

The competition was sailed in good spirit with everybody enjoying the day together.

Special thanks to David Black and his wife for scoring the event and to Ian McDonald for assisting David and observing.

RC Laser Racing 2014 Victorian Title

2014 VIC Title_Results

Congratulations to all of the sailors in the RC Laser racing 2014 Victorian State Title and in particular to Victorian Scott Fleming for defending his title.  The field included RC Laser sailors from South Australia, Barongarook and Colac.

South Australian Jurgen Luther added silver to his growing list of trophies and Cameron Davies who races with Scott at the Waterways/Patterson Lakes Club sailed well to take out the bronze.

Grey skies greeted the ten skippers on arrival at Patterson Lakes on the morning of Saturday 25th May and racing commenced at 10 am with a steady, light nor’easter.  The breeze steadily picked up and B sails quickly replaced the As.  The B sails prevailed through most of the day although C sails were tried out by some of the competitors as the breeze strengthened.

At the lunch break, the score-card had five skippers within a few points of each other, however the situation changed after the meal-break with Scott and Jurgen skipping clear and Cameron and Grant Gillespie (Colac) battling it out for the bronze.

Another RC Laser racing event decided and a great day had by all.

A big thanks to Frank Katers, PRO and Tony Smith, PRO’s assistant.
