Regatta Report – 2012 Queensland States

Read Nigel & John’s report on another great event at Lake Kawana

The competitors that attended the 2012 QLD State RC Laser championships were treated to a fantastic weekend of sailing on the Sunshine Coast on the weekend 30th June 1stJuly 2012.

The weather was probably the best Qld has experienced in the 7 years of holding this event.

The entrants as well as a few other RC Laser skippers tested the venue on Saturday afternoon, with some of the skippers showing tremendous boat speed in the light north-east breeze. This showed the locals that they would have to bring their A game on Sunday.

Sunday morning Lake Kawana was like a sheet of glass with no evidence of the forecast 15 knot South Wester. So the venue was set up and the buoys set up for a south west orientated course.

After a few cups of tea and coffee the boats were rigged with A sails and we waited for the breeze. At 1050 the first race was started with the breeze coming from the north-east, and after 6 races we paused for lunch.

At this stage when David Black tallied the score Peter Newman and Nigel Price were even on 8 points apiece.

After lunch the races resumed with the breeze becoming more steady in strength and direction. The racing was very close for the rest of the afternoon with some outstanding duels from all sailors on the water.

With the last race finishing at a slow pace it was decided that at 4pm it was time to finish.

David tallied the scores and the presentation followed. 1st place Nigel Price, 2nd place Peter Newman and 3rd place Randy Aitkinson.

The event was held in good spirit with good seamanship and fair play being the order of the weekend.

Congratulations to everyone who entered.
